The museum houses 25 full-sized aircraft including six suspended from the ceiling, with floor-to-ceiling windows providing gorgeous natural light and opportunities for one-of-a-kind photos. The Hargrave Street Market has lots of natural light, making it a great location for both indoor and outdoor photos — you can grab a coffee and take photos in the lounge space, then step outside for an urban feel with nearby pocket parks and landscaped areas around the block. It's ideal for couples who want a modern, city-feel session without committing to the grittier textures of the Exchange District. The mix of interior warmth and exterior urban architecture gives you genuine variety within a short walk, which is practical on a wedding day when travel time matters.
Upper Fort Garry
Nestled in the heart of downtown, Upper Fort Garry combines historical significance with modern urban flair. Its old gates and beautifully landscaped grounds provide a charming backdrop, especially for couples getting married at nearby venues like the Manitoba Club or Fort Garry Hotel. The BDI & Elm Park Bridge

The Elm Park Bridge — sometimes called the BDI Bridge or the Ice Cream Bridge — is a steel truss bridge over the Red River, opened in 1914. The combination of the historic bridge, the riverside paths, and the classic summer energy of the BDI makes this a surprisingly versatile photo location. St. Vital Park, Kildonan Park and King’s Park
St. Vital Park, Kildonan Park and King’s Park are scenic public parks with lush greenery, duck ponds and picturesque footbridges. La Barrière Park
La Barrière Park is one of those Winnipeg locations that locals know and love but that rarely shows up on photographer location guides — which makes it a great choice if you want something a little more tucked away. Located in the south end of the city along the La Salle River, the park offers beautiful river access, wooded trails, and open meadow areas that photograph well in almost any season. It has a quieter, more intimate feel than Assiniboine Park or Birds Hill, which suits couples who want something natural and unhurried without driving far. FortWhyte Alive
If you and your partner are nature enthusiasts, FortWhyte Alive offers an immersive outdoor experience. With lakes, forests, and floating boardwalks, this nature reserve provides a diverse landscape for your wedding or engagement photos. Whether you're posing by the water’s edge or strolling through the forest, FortWhyte Alive is perfect for capturing moments infused with nature. University of Manitoba Campus
For couples with a personal connection to this iconic institution, the University of Manitoba offers stunning architectural backgrounds for your photos. From stately stone buildings to modern lecture halls, this campus provides a blend of tradition and contemporary style. If you have a special spot on campus, like the place you first met, it’s worth incorporating it into your photo session. You might even be able to access indoor areas with the right connections!
Manitoba Wedding Photo Locations Beyond Winnipeg
Some of our favourite photo locations in Manitoba require a bit of a drive — and they're absolutely worth it. Whether you're planning a dedicated engagement session or just want something more adventurous than a city park, these spots deliver scenery you simply can't find closer to home.
Pinawa Dam
If you're willing to make the drive, Pinawa Dam is one of the most dramatic photo locations in all of Manitoba — and it's genuinely underused by Winnipeg couples. The historic dam ruins sit along the Winnipeg River about 100km east of the city, and the combination of weathered stone structures, rushing water, and rugged rock formations gives you a look that you simply cannot replicate anywhere closer to home. In summer the water levels and greenery make it lush and cinematic. In winter the bare stone against snow creates something moody and completely different. We've photographed here in both seasons and it never disappoints. Budget about two hours of drive time and plan to arrive well before golden hour — the light on the water in the evening is worth every minute of the trip.
Grand Beach
Grand Beach is about an hour north of Winnipeg on the eastern shore of Lake Winnipeg, and it's one of our favourite places to photograph in all of Manitoba. The sunsets here are exceptional — the light drops straight over the open water in a way that's hard to find anywhere else near the city. Beyond the main beach there's a quieter cove area, sand dunes that shift from year to year, and long stretches of shoreline that give you room to move around and find different looks within a single session. It works best as an engagement or pre-wedding location rather than a same-day wedding photo stop given the distance, but couples who make the trip always come back with something genuinely special. Plan to arrive at least 90 minutes before sunset. Provincial Park Pass required.
Gimli
Gimli is about an hour north of Winnipeg on the western shore of Lake Winnipeg, and it has a character that's completely its own. The harbour, the open water, the painted boats, the lighthouse, and the relaxed small-town energy of the main street all come together in a way that feels nostalgic and unhurried. It photographs differently depending on the time of day — golden hour at the harbour is genuinely beautiful — and the variety of the town means you can move through several distinct looks within a short walk. Best as an engagement or love story session rather than a wedding day location. Worth the drive for couples who want something that feels a little more like an adventure.
What to Know Before Choosing Your Photo Location
Timing matters more than location.
The single biggest factor in great outdoor photos isn't where you are — it's when you shoot. Golden hour, the 45–60 minutes before sunset, produces the warmest, most flattering light of the day. For outdoor sessions we recommend starting at least 90 minutes before sunset so you have time to settle in, move through the location, and still finish in that beautiful evening light. For indoor locations, earlier in the day often works better since you're relying on window light rather than ambient outdoor conditions.
Consider travel time on your wedding day.
If you're choosing a location for your formal wedding photos, proximity to your venue matters a lot. Every 15 minutes of travel is 15 minutes of your photography time gone. As a general rule, we recommend keeping your photo locations within a 10–15 minute drive of your ceremony or reception venue. The locations in our Manitoba section are best saved for a dedicated engagement session rather than your wedding day.
Some locations require permits or fees.
Several spots on this list — including the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden, The Leaf, the Manitoba Legislative Building interior, and Dalnavert Museum — require advance booking and may charge a fee. Others like Birds Hill Provincial Park require a Manitoba Parks Pass. We always recommend confirming requirements at least a few weeks before your session. Seasonal considerations are real.
Winnipeg's seasons change these locations dramatically — and that's not always a bad thing. Birds Hill in October with fall colour is completely different from Birds Hill in July, and both are beautiful. The St. Norbert Ruins in winter with fresh snow is one of our favourite looks of the year. Don't be afraid to lean into the season rather than fight it. We shoot year-round and genuinely love what Manitoba winter does for photos when you embrace it.
Have a backup plan.
Manitoba weather is unpredictable. An overcast sky is actually ideal for portraits — the clouds act as a giant softbox and eliminate harsh shadows — so don't panic if it's not sunny. Rain is workable too with the right gear and attitude. What's harder to work with is extreme cold combined with outdoor locations, or venues that don't have any covered backup space. When in doubt, have a second location in mind and stay flexible.
