Where to Take Your Wedding Photos In Winnipeg

When choosing wedding or engagement photo locations, it's essential to pick spots close to your ceremony to minimize travel time and keep your day on schedule. Winnipeg offers a variety of beautiful indoor and outdoor locations for stunning photography, each with its unique charm. Some places require pre-booking and may have additional fees, so planning ahead is key.

We're Cheryl & Joel, Winnipeg wedding photographers with over 15 years of experience shooting at locations across the city and throughout Manitoba. Every spot on this list is somewhere we've actually worked — so beyond the logistics, we can tell you exactly how the light falls, where to stand, and what time of day gets the best results. If you're still looking for your photographer, we'd love to hear about your day.

Indoor Locations

Winnipeg's winters can be challenging for outdoor photography, making indoor venues a popular choice for many couples. Here are some top indoor locations:

May 11 Studio

May 11 Studio is a stylish, contemporary space perfect for couples seeking clean, minimalist backdrops. The studio’s bright, open layout and neutral tones allow your photos to focus on you, with natural light pouring in through large windows. This studio is ideal for intimate portraits or editorial-style wedding photos. Pre-booking is essential, and fees apply, so be sure to secure your spot in advance.

Allure Studios

Allure Studios offers a sophisticated, chic setting for your indoor photo session. With a blend of modern and timeless elements, this studio provides versatility in your shots, whether you're looking for sleek and polished or soft and romantic vibes. The carefully curated decor and excellent lighting make it a fantastic choice for both engagement and wedding photos. Like May 11, Allure Studios requires pre-booking, and fees apply.

The Leaf at Assiniboine Park - Indoor Biomes

A newer addition to Winnipeg's photo locations, The Leaf is a botanical wonderland inside Assiniboine Park. Featuring tropical plants, stunning architectural design, and vibrant floral displays year-round, The Leaf offers an oasis of natural beauty regardless of Winnipeg's weather. You can capture lush, colorful photos among the greenery without worrying about the cold. While it's a public space, you’ll need to pay an entrance fee for the indoor option.

The Manitoba Legislative Building

If you're dreaming of timeless elegance, The Manitoba Legislative Building provides the perfect setting. Known for its grand architecture, this iconic building offers both indoor and outdoor options. The majestic Grand Staircase inside is a popular spot for capturing regal, dramatic shots. For couples interested in indoor photos here, pre-booking is required. The outdoor areas, featuring stately columns and manicured gardens, are free to shoot in and add a touch of classic sophistication to your photos.

The Forks

The Forks is one of Winnipeg’s most versatile locations, offering a mix of indoor and outdoor settings that cater to a variety of styles. Inside, you'll find unique industrial backdrops, while the outdoor areas provide picturesque riverside views and historic architecture. Whether you’re looking for something edgy or romantic, The Forks can deliver. Some indoor areas may require permission to shoot, so it’s worth checking ahead.

The Dalnavert Museum

For couples who want something completely unlike anything else in Winnipeg, the Dalnavert Museum is one of the city's best-kept secrets for wedding photos. Built in 1895, this ornate Victorian mansion in the heart of downtown is one of the finest examples of Queen Anne Revival architecture in Western Canada. The lavish interior and surrounding Heritage Gardens are actively bookable for wedding and engagement photography, with competitive pricing and a variety of historic backdrops. Think wraparound porches, intricate woodwork, period rooms, and a walled garden — the kind of romantic, timeless setting that photographs beautifully and that most couples have never even considered. Pre-booking required; contact them directly at info@dalnavertmuseum.ca.

Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada

For couples who want something genuinely bold and unexpected, the Royal Aviation Museum is one of Winnipeg's most striking and underused photo locations. The museum houses 25 full-sized aircraft including six suspended from the ceiling, with floor-to-ceiling windows providing gorgeous natural light and opportunities for one-of-a-kind photos. The industrial scale of the building, the drama of vintage aircraft as backdrops, and the clean modern architecture of the building itself create a look that is completely different from anything else in the city. You can exchange vows in the Observation Lounge beneath a stunning northern lights sculpture, among bush planes and fighter jets on the hangar floor, or in an intimate ballroom-style space overlooking the hangar floor. Best suited to couples with an adventurous or non-traditional aesthetic. Admission fees apply for public visits; full venue rental available for weddings.

Local Restaurants or Bars

For couples wanting a more laid-back, personalized feel, consider arranging a photo session at a favorite local restaurant or bar. Whether it’s the place where you had your first date or just a spot you both love, these intimate venues can add a unique twist to your wedding or engagement photos. With a little pre-planning, you can grab a drink, enjoy a moment with your wedding party, and capture some candid shots in a cozy atmosphere.

Outdoor Locations

Winnipeg has no shortage of picturesque outdoor spots for wedding and engagement photos. Here are some standout options:

Birds Hill Provincial Park

Just a short drive from Winnipeg, Birds Hill Provincial Park offers a wide array of natural backdrops, making it a favorite for wedding and engagement sessions. From dense forests to open meadows and a serene beach, Birds Hill allows for a full photography adventure. It’s a place where you can capture a diverse range of moods, from romantic sunset shots on the beach to playful, candid moments in the fields. Keep in mind that springtime can bring ticks and poison ivy, so come prepared. And don't forget your Provincial Park Pass to avoid fines.

The Leaf at Assiniboine Park - The Gardens

The Leaf's outdoor gardens in Assiniboine Park offer a variety of stunning photo locations, from vibrant flower beds to peaceful water features. With beautifully landscaped spaces like the Indigenous Peoples Garden and English Garden, you'll find the perfect backdrop for every shot, whether you're after a romantic setting or something a bit more natural and scenic.

St. Boniface Cathedral

The ruins of St. Boniface Cathedral are a striking contrast between old and new, providing a dramatic setting for wedding photos. The combination of ancient stone walls and modern design elements makes this location unique. It's a spot where history and romance intertwine, creating unforgettable images. Across the street, the nunnery offers a fantastic view of downtown Winnipeg, adding an urban touch to your shots. Pre-booking is required, especially for weekend sessions.

Trappist Monastery - St. Norbert

The Trappist Monastery ruins in St. Norbert feel like stepping into a fairy tale. Surrounded by lush greenery, the ancient stone walls of this historic site create an ethereal atmosphere that is perfect for capturing romantic, dreamy photos. Whether you're looking for engagement photos or wedding portraits, this location offers a magical blend of nature and history. Pre-booking is necessary, and fees may apply.

Assiniboine Park

Assiniboine Park is a perennial favorite among Winnipeg couples. With its vast green spaces, charming footbridges, and picturesque gardens, this park provides endless opportunities for beautiful outdoor photos. The Leo Mol Garden, in particular, is a stunning spot for capturing intimate, nature-infused moments, though pre-booking and fees apply for this area. For a broader range of photos, the surrounding parkland offers plenty of free-to-access spaces.

The Exchange District/Downtown

For couples who love urban settings, the Exchange District and downtown Winnipeg offer a perfect backdrop. The historic buildings, cobblestone streets, and vibrant street art make this area a go-to for capturing stylish, city-chic photos. This public space requires no booking or fees, allowing you the freedom to explore and shoot at your leisure.

Hargrave Street Market

One of Winnipeg's newer downtown gems and virtually absent from every competitor's location guide. The Hargrave Street Market has lots of natural light, making it a great location for both indoor and outdoor photos — you can grab a coffee and take photos in the lounge space, then step outside for an urban feel with nearby pocket parks and landscaped areas around the block. It's ideal for couples who want a modern, city-feel session without committing to the grittier textures of the Exchange District. The mix of interior warmth and exterior urban architecture gives you genuine variety within a short walk, which is practical on a wedding day when travel time matters.

Upper Fort Garry

Nestled in the heart of downtown, Upper Fort Garry combines historical significance with modern urban flair. Its old gates and beautifully landscaped grounds provide a charming backdrop, especially for couples getting married at nearby venues like the Manitoba Club or Fort Garry Hotel. The hustle and bustle of the city adds a dynamic element to your photos, with the occasional car horn or passerby enhancing the lively downtown vibe.

The BDI & Elm Park Bridge

If you want a photo location that feels genuinely Winnipeg rather than generically pretty, the BDI and Elm Park Bridge is it. From first dates to wedding photos, people have been coming to the Bridge Drive-In for decades to experience one of the most nostalgic spots in the city. The Elm Park Bridge — sometimes called the BDI Bridge or the Ice Cream Bridge — is a steel truss bridge over the Red River, opened in 1914. The combination of the historic bridge, the riverside paths, and the classic summer energy of the BDI makes this a surprisingly versatile photo location. In warmer months, end your session with a cone. No booking required, no fee — just one of those spots that feels personal and very Winnipeg.

St. Vital Park, Kildonan Park and King’s Park

St. Vital Park, Kildonan Park and King’s Park are scenic public parks with lush greenery, duck ponds and picturesque footbridges. These parks are ideal for couples looking to capture romantic, nature-filled moments. In the fall, the vibrant colors of the changing leaves add a stunning touch to your photos, making them a perfect choice for seasonal sessions.

La Barrière Park

La Barrière Park is one of those Winnipeg locations that locals know and love but that rarely shows up on photographer location guides — which makes it a great choice if you want something a little more tucked away. Located in the south end of the city along the La Salle River, the park offers beautiful river access, wooded trails, and open meadow areas that photograph well in almost any season. It has a quieter, more intimate feel than Assiniboine Park or Birds Hill, which suits couples who want something natural and unhurried without driving far. No booking or fees required — just show up and explore.

FortWhyte Alive

If you and your partner are nature enthusiasts, FortWhyte Alive offers an immersive outdoor experience. With lakes, forests, and floating boardwalks, this nature reserve provides a diverse landscape for your wedding or engagement photos. Whether you're posing by the water’s edge or strolling through the forest, FortWhyte Alive is perfect for capturing moments infused with nature. Note that there is an admission fee, so check their website for details.

University of Manitoba Campus

For couples with a personal connection to this iconic institution, the University of Manitoba offers stunning architectural backgrounds for your photos. From stately stone buildings to modern lecture halls, this campus provides a blend of tradition and contemporary style. If you have a special spot on campus, like the place you first met, it’s worth incorporating it into your photo session. You might even be able to access indoor areas with the right connections!

Manitoba Wedding Photo Locations Beyond Winnipeg

Some of our favourite photo locations in Manitoba require a bit of a drive — and they're absolutely worth it. Whether you're planning a dedicated engagement session or just want something more adventurous than a city park, these spots deliver scenery you simply can't find closer to home.

Pinawa Dam

If you're willing to make the drive, Pinawa Dam is one of the most dramatic photo locations in all of Manitoba — and it's genuinely underused by Winnipeg couples. The historic dam ruins sit along the Winnipeg River about 100km east of the city, and the combination of weathered stone structures, rushing water, and rugged rock formations gives you a look that you simply cannot replicate anywhere closer to home. In summer the water levels and greenery make it lush and cinematic. In winter the bare stone against snow creates something moody and completely different. We've photographed here in both seasons and it never disappoints. Budget about two hours of drive time and plan to arrive well before golden hour — the light on the water in the evening is worth every minute of the trip.

Grand Beach

Grand Beach is about an hour north of Winnipeg on the eastern shore of Lake Winnipeg, and it's one of our favourite places to photograph in all of Manitoba. The sunsets here are exceptional — the light drops straight over the open water in a way that's hard to find anywhere else near the city. Beyond the main beach there's a quieter cove area, sand dunes that shift from year to year, and long stretches of shoreline that give you room to move around and find different looks within a single session. It works best as an engagement or pre-wedding location rather than a same-day wedding photo stop given the distance, but couples who make the trip always come back with something genuinely special. Plan to arrive at least 90 minutes before sunset. Provincial Park Pass required.

Gimli

Gimli is about an hour north of Winnipeg on the western shore of Lake Winnipeg, and it has a character that's completely its own. The harbour, the open water, the painted boats, the lighthouse, and the relaxed small-town energy of the main street all come together in a way that feels nostalgic and unhurried. It photographs differently depending on the time of day — golden hour at the harbour is genuinely beautiful — and the variety of the town means you can move through several distinct looks within a short walk. Best as an engagement or love story session rather than a wedding day location. Worth the drive for couples who want something that feels a little more like an adventure.

What to Know Before Choosing Your Photo Location

Timing matters more than location.

The single biggest factor in great outdoor photos isn't where you are — it's when you shoot. Golden hour, the 45–60 minutes before sunset, produces the warmest, most flattering light of the day. For outdoor sessions we recommend starting at least 90 minutes before sunset so you have time to settle in, move through the location, and still finish in that beautiful evening light. For indoor locations, earlier in the day often works better since you're relying on window light rather than ambient outdoor conditions.

Consider travel time on your wedding day.

If you're choosing a location for your formal wedding photos, proximity to your venue matters a lot. Every 15 minutes of travel is 15 minutes of your photography time gone. As a general rule, we recommend keeping your photo locations within a 10–15 minute drive of your ceremony or reception venue. The locations in our Manitoba section are best saved for a dedicated engagement session rather than your wedding day.

Some locations require permits or fees.

Several spots on this list — including the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden, The Leaf, the Manitoba Legislative Building interior, and Dalnavert Museum — require advance booking and may charge a fee. Others like Birds Hill Provincial Park require a Manitoba Parks Pass. We always recommend confirming requirements at least a few weeks before your session. We're happy to help navigate this for couples we're working with.

Seasonal considerations are real.

Winnipeg's seasons change these locations dramatically — and that's not always a bad thing. Birds Hill in October with fall colour is completely different from Birds Hill in July, and both are beautiful. The St. Norbert Ruins in winter with fresh snow is one of our favourite looks of the year. Don't be afraid to lean into the season rather than fight it. We shoot year-round and genuinely love what Manitoba winter does for photos when you embrace it.

Have a backup plan.

Manitoba weather is unpredictable. An overcast sky is actually ideal for portraits — the clouds act as a giant softbox and eliminate harsh shadows — so don't panic if it's not sunny. Rain is workable too with the right gear and attitude. What's harder to work with is extreme cold combined with outdoor locations, or venues that don't have any covered backup space. When in doubt, have a second location in mind and stay flexible.

You don't need to choose alone.

If you're working with us, location scouting is part of the process. Tell us the feel you're going for — natural, urban, historic, adventurous — and we'll match you with the right spot for your season, your venue, and your timeline. Reach out here and let's figure it out together.
